Cloud Bookmarking: Organize Your Bookmarks

Bethany | January 15, 2020June 9, 2020

I have a confession to make: I am a bookmark pack rat. I have had hundreds of bookmarks, the vast majority for websites I rarely (if ever) visit. I have made some attempts at organizing these (mostly through bookmark folders in Firefox) but I still have had loads of uncategoized bookmarks outside the folders. This summer, I was tired of seeing all these messy bookmarks, so I decided to attempt something new and organize them through (what I termed) Cloud Bookmarking.

First off, I use Firefox for most of my Internet browsing. I’ve flirted with Google’s Chrome and found it useful, but I still like Firefox better. As I looked at my bookmarks, I realized one of my big bookmarking problems was that many of the unorganized ones I had were all from websites I had once wanted to read, but hadn’t had time to get to. Thus, I accumulated a backlog of plenty of unread, unorganized bookmarks. The organizaned ones I had were in a slightly better shape, but the sheer number I had of them caused my browser to load slower, so I needed to clean them up as well.

I run a laptop and a main desktop. Too often, the files (especially bookmarks) are out of sync with each other. The laptop is a little slower in processing speed than the desktop, so I wanted to make cleaning it a priority. Thus, I envisioned a bookmarking system in which all my bookmarks (aside from a few vital RSS and bookmark toolbar ones) would reside on an online server, easily accessible and updatable, but not stored in my Firefox browser.

Firefox is my favorite browser partly due to the huge number of incredibly useful applications available for it. I use Lifehacker to find a lot of awesome apps to add to my browser (although I try not to add too many) and I did a search on Lifehacker for a bookmarking tool. I had heard of Delicious, and of other social bookmarking websites, but I really didn’t need (and still don’t) to share my bookmarks with others. I still signed up for Delicious anyway, to give a trial run, and it had problems loading my browsers bookmarks onto its servers. Whatever. So, I tried another program, this one an application for Firefox called Xmarks (formerly Foxmarks). I was instantly impressed by the array of positive reviews on it online, along with the uber helpful developer feedback on Xmark’s website. I added the app, made and account, and tried it out.

Xmarks easily synced all my bookmarks to its serve, and I was able to access them from either computer. However, I still had a few issues when first setting it all up. I ran into the fairly annoying “password exclusion” error, something a few others have hit as well (based on my searching of Xmarks help section). Also, understanding some of the syncing profiles and such gave me a little trouble in the beginning. However, with a little patience, I was able to get it all set to my liking.

To rectify my “bookmarking-everything-I-can’t -read-at-the-moment-then-forget-about-it” problem, I found another program that works for just that: ReadItLater. It is an application for Firefox as well, and adds some nice functions to the browser that aid in quickly adding items to a “read it later list.” This list may be perused at one’s leisure, whenever. I had a little bit of an issue getting it not conflict with Xmarks, but once again, the helpful guides on Xmark’s website came to the rescue.

So, am I really “Cloud Bookmarking?” Not exactly. Some stuff is still stored on my Desktop, albeit more organized than before. My laptop is now the closest to Cloud Bookmarking though, with everything except a ReadItLater folder online. I’m happy with the setup and I hope it will increase my browser speeds as well as my productivity online.

iPods: The New Generation in Storage Devices

Bethany | January 10, 2020June 9, 2020

Do you ever hear people asking why are iPods so great or why everyone is making such a big deal about them? Well I can tell you exactly why iPods are the best music and multi-media storage device available. I’d like to start of by saying that I am a proud owner of a 30GB iPod video and the reason I bought an iPod was because of the amount of storage space available in such a little, compact, easy to carry device. The iPod Classic or Video allows you to not only store 1000’s of songs but over 50 hours of videos. In fact the brand new 160GB iPod Classic allows you to store 40,000 songs and over 200 hours of video. All of this memory is great to have because you don’t have to carry around all of your music collection in CD’s or cassettes.

Some people are skeptical about having so much memory. I hear people asking all the time, why do you need so many songs in one device? Every time I hear that question, I have the same answer, to have a variety of songs anytime at the touch of a finger. I can’t tell you how great it is to have any songs available to you at any point and time. Apple, the creator of iPods even made it easier for everyone to import their favorite music onto their iPods with the program called “iTunes”. With an easy click of a button, you can upload brand new songs and video to you iPod in a matter of seconds! What makes iTunes even better, is the fact that there is an online music store available right in the program! Apple could not have made using iPods and iTunes easier.

The second major reason iPods are the best multi-media storage device is because of all the accessories available. My personal favorite iPod accessory is the car adaptor. The car adaptor allows you to not only charge your iPod in the car but listen to music as well. The car adaptor is one of many great accessories including anything from carrying cases and portable speakers to docks and AV cables. All of the accessories for iPods are quality products that make the enjoyment of having an iPod even better.

IPods are often said to be unreliable and known to have many glitches. That statement is completely false. I mean, of course occasionally the iPod will freeze if you have 1000’s of songs stored and are trying to switch songs quickly but for the amount of storage the iPod has and the speed of processing the songs while playing is incredible. IPods are extremely sturdy as well. Depending on the version of iPod you get, most of them have some kind of metal in the material they’re made of. I’ve personally dropped my iPod approximately 20 times and the functioning works the same as when I took it out of the box. Also from my past experiences with MP3 players the iPod’s are definitely the most durable and most reliable out of any other brand of MP3 player.

IPods are great for any age audience. They make great gifts for anyone as well. IPods can serve many purposes, anywhere from entertaining kids with a movie to serving as a music player while jogging. IPods are really the best storage device available today.

NZB Drop – Download All the Files, and Only the Files You Want

Bethany | January 5, 2020June 9, 2020

I download quite a bit of stuff off the Internet, streaming video, music from etree (an organization that tracks bands which allow their concerts to be taped and traded), dozens of different Linux distributions, and more. I also like to watch and participate in various discussion groups on the Internet, from topics dealing with politics and sports to music and movies.

All of this can be done via Usenet, a part of the Internet that’s been around since before the advent of graphical web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Safari or Firefox. Usenet is, in many ways, the precursor to Internet message boards; it is a place where anyone can go and read what someone has written about a certain topic, respond publicly and have their views read and critiqued.

As graphical web browsers have grown and gained popularity, Usenet has found itself becoming less and less mainstream, until it seems that most of its use is for downloading programs and videos and music. Still, if you find the right group or subject, the Usenet experience can still be a positive one.

For most of my daily Usenet use, I use a full-fledged Usenet client, which lets me participate in discussions, as well as browse through the available downloads. I have reviewed my favorite of these clients – Unison – in a previous review. There are times, however, when all I want to do is download a specific set of files. I don’t want to browse to see what’s available. I know what I want, and I have a file that knows exactly where that stuff is.

NZB is a file format for use with Usenet, that tells a usenet client exactly which server a file has been uploaded to, and the names of each of that file’s parts. Unison is able to deal with NZB files quite well. In fact, most of the time all I need to do is double-click on one of these NZB files, and Unison will pop open and start downloading. But not all Usenet clients have this ability. Some don’t support the format. What about them?

For users of other programs, a small utility exists called NZB Drop. NZB Drop is a program that really only does one thing – download NZB files. It won’t let you read discussions, or browse through a group’s binary postings. All it does is take the NZB file you gave it, and download the items listed inside.

And in that regard, it does incredibly well, and is quite intelligent about it as well. The first thing that makes NZB Drop so nice to use is that after being configured, it’s ready to go. And if you use more than one Usenet server (one for reading posts and one for downloading stuff that might not be found on your regular server), NZB Drop handles this as well. Simply input your different servers, and for a server that you want to use only as a last resort (since you may have paid for premium access and don’t want to use it if you don’t have to), just mark it as such, and NZB Drop will only use said server if none of your “regular” servers have the items in question.

In my tests, NZB Drop did exactly what I expected of a program such as this, except in one area, in which the change was a pleasant surprise. To ensure that an uploaded file has the greatest chance of being downloaded completely uncorrupted, people sharing files have developed a system of par2 files, which are able to fix a file with missing pieces. These pieces are completely unnecessary if the downloaded file was transmitted completely free of error, and would only count as wasted bandwidth in that case.

NZB Drop deals with these files quite well. By default, only the main file is downloaded, along with the file necessary to see if that file is complete. If it is, the repair files are not downloaded. If they are needed, simply tell NZB Drop to download a few, and then click to repair. Easy and a nice feature!

Finally, NZB Drop is fast. Obviously, one downloading program should be just as fast as another, but this doesn’t always seem to be the case. My Usenet account allows me to connect up to 20 times at once, so I could conceivably be downloading 20 files, all at the same time. This is often unnecessary, however, since I am usually able to completely fill my download bandwidth from their servers, so adding connections wouldn’t be advantageous. For someone using a connection that limits the speed of individual connections but not the overall, this is a great feature, and one that can increase download speeds dramatically.

In my opinion, while NZB Drop is a great little one-trick pony, it may not be for everyone. It’s entirely possible to download files and read discussion groups on Usenet without ever using one of these NZB files, and for those people, NZB Drop is entirely unnecessary. For those of us who use the format, however, and might be stuck using a Usenet client without NZB support, ZNB Drop is a fantastic piece of software, and for those people, I can’t recommend it highly enough.
