Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player: Fun Toddler Toy for Music Lovers

Bethany | February 29, 2020June 9, 2020

Our son has always loved music. Even during his early months of colic, music offered some relief from the crying. So when we discovered the Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player, a mock toy MP3 player just for toddlers, we knew we had to try it for our son. The Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player is a plastic pretend MP3 player made just for toddlers.

The Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player is a brightly colored plastic toy with a neck strap for carrying and a set of headphones. The working music player offers 21 toddler-friendly tunes for your child’s listening pleasure. Some of the songs have lyrics and some are instrumental. The tunes on the Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player include such classics as Mary Had a Little Lamb, Skip to My Lou, and other nursery rhyme and classic songs for young children.

The buttons on the Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player are easy to master for little hands. Our 2 ½ year old is able to manipulate the play and stop buttons with no trouble. He remembers which buttons play and stop the music by the shapes drawn on them. The Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player is lightweight and easily carried. The headphones of the Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player are just the right size for toddler ears.

There are a few drawbacks to the Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player. First of all, the strap that allows your toddler to wear the Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player around his or her neck does not fit over the head. It has to be opened and snapped shut. Young hands could never manipulate this alone. Also, the volume of the Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player gets rather loud-much too loud for young ears. The volume on the Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player really should not be able to go as high as it does.

The Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player sells for about $18.99 and be found at a variety of retailers both online and in stores. The product requires two AAA batteries to operate.

Overall, despite a few drawbacks, I give the Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player four out of five stars as a fun toddler toy. Our son has been walking around the house for days wearing his little headphones of the Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player. The songs are all excellent for learning and the look of the Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player allows your child to feel grown-up and to imitate Mommy or Daddy. Since he is unable to control the volume on his Little Tikes Jam N Play MP3 Player we will continue to use this fun modeling toy.

Is a 208 Volt Power Supply Better for Data Centers?

Bethany | February 25, 2020June 9, 2020

If you manage a data center, then you should pay great attention to the power requirements of your server equipment. Since the businesses nowadays are dealing with increasing amount of data and applications, the number of server equipments required in a data center is required has increased manifold. The server racks have certainly helped to pack the equipment tightly in the server room but the tight density has led to another problem. Nowadays there are increasing cases of the 110 Volts circuits getting overloaded and thus requiring additional circuits or server racks. You can prevent the problems of overloading circuits by switching to 208 Volts power supply instead of a North American standard off 110 Volts. Since most of the server equipment is manufactured for universal power supplies, they recognize the input voltage automatically and work correctly even with a high voltage power supply. Plus there are several advantages of using a 208 V power supply that are described below.

First of all, the 208 V power supply allows you to connect nearly double the number of equipment to a circuit when compared to the 110 V power supply. This results in an in instant improvement in your server equipment capacity. The 208 voltage power supply can also reduce your power consumption thereby leading to significant savings in your power tariff. This makes it a very important consideration that every small and medium sized business must take into account when they are establishing their data centers.

When you have a 208 V power supply, it will allow you to operate your data center with less number of power whips under the floor when you have raised floor environment. The fewer power whips you have, the fewer circuits you need to manage and thus it will reduce the clutter below the floor. This will also improve the airflow which directly results in lesser cost of cooling. The improved airflow also improves the life of your server and air conditioning equipment.

The 208 V power supply is also more efficient and can result in power savings. This is because the 208 V power line consists of two live lines when compared to 110 V power line that consists of only one in live line. The 2 phase power supply allows you to run your data center efficiently with less power consumption.

The high voltage power supply may not always be a feasible option due to the type of environment you have and whether you have the budget to retrofit your entire data center with the 208 V power. However you must consider the benefits of 208 V power supply before you make any decision. Using the high voltage power supply results in an power saving, improved cooling and ventilation and better server rack density. Plus you save a lot of money in power bills, maintenance and repairs of server and air conditioning equipment. All this definitely makes the 208 V power supply an attractive proposition.

How to Create a Watch Folder in Carbon Encoding Server

Bethany | February 22, 2020June 9, 2020

If you have Carbon Encoding Server and you want to batch process a lot of video files for conversion or encoding then you will want to setup Watch Folders so your users can more easily do this type of job. We use our watch folders for easily allowing our users to encode and convert multiple files at a time, simply by adding them to these different watch folders. We setup multiple watch folders for different users who want different video conversion or encoding types, then the users simply have to choose which watch folder to drop their file in so it’s converted to the type they want. In this guide I will walk you through how to setup a watch folder on a Carbon Encoding Server.

So first thing to understand is that a watch folder is simply a folder you setup on the server that will be for dropping files into, these files are then processed by the encoding server to the settings you setup when you created the watch folder. This is why I have like 20 watch folders, not all of my users want all of their videos to be in the flash format some want MPEG4 or H.264 for high definition videos. So what I do is allow them a simple way to batch convert their files with these watch folders.

So let’s setup a watch folder, follow these steps:

  • Open Carbon Server Admin Console
  • Click Watch Folders Tab
  • Click Add Watch Button
  • Click General Properties (Left view pane)
  • Name your Watch Folder
  • Click Browse
  • Choose Folder you want to use as your Watch Folder
  • Click Check Box next to Create one Job for each Target
  • Click Target Files (Left view pane)
  • Click New Target (Left view pane)
  • Click Browse (Under Preset)
  • Click file type to convert to (I did h.264, change settings as needed)
  • Click Select Preset
  • Click Browse (Next to Target Folder)
  • Select folder you want to use as your Target (where the files will be created)
  • Click Save Watch

Now you should have a watch folder that when video files are dropped into it, they will automatically be converted to the file type you selected when setting up this folder. The file type and all settings will be applied to the video file as it is encoded to the exact specifications you choose while setting up the folder. You can drop 1 or 100 files in here and they will all get encoded eventually, Carbon Server will go through the files and encode them one by one until it is finished and then you can use the finished product from your target folder.

Well I hope this guide helps anyone trying to setup watch folders on a Carbon Encoding Server.

How to Choose a Web Hosting Provider

Bethany | February 19, 2020June 9, 2020

Many people dream of putting their lives and dreams on the Web for their loved ones to see. Some people do it the hard way and proceed ond designing their site from the ground up. Others who have no time spare simply assign the task to professionals who could do the job for them.

Here are some tips for people who have the time to spend on their personal Web site project and have a bit of an adventurous streak in them. A word of advice, for those not up on the tech speak may have some problems understanding the lingo so it is advisable to ask a tech pal for help.

  1. Check the cost first. One has to decide whether their Web site will carry a name of their choice or have their name linked to the company’s name? This is commonly known as getting a domain name. If one wants a name, they have to spend for it. Some Web sites offer free web hosting but they have their company name in ones URL.
  2. Reputation. With all the many Web hosting sites around. There are some that do outstanding service with speedy response and no downtimes or missed periods. Others simply promise good service but deliver below average services. Most of the poor service includes inability to link and log into the website plus slow connection times.
  3. Customer Service. Like any other business, just because one has a web host account doesn’t mean that the customer is regulated a single email in case of trouble.

The beauty of a good Web site or Web host provider is that they provide a live person to contact or call in case any problems are. The sites that offer live support are the ones that newbie’s into web hosting should get into.

  1. Contract length. Some people believe that entering into a short contract is a good way to test the websites services and features.

While there is nothing wrong with this, the advantage of a long term contract is that the customer can see the impact of the value added services that the web host has included in the package. Users should look for a provider that offers a customizable set or services for a set price and the ability to upgrades ones account if needed.

  1. Server access. One thing that people look for in establishing their own website is the degree of control in their Web site design. There are some companies that allow full access to their servers while others have limited access. This is mainly due to security issues and user should see if they need the full access.

For the casual user, a limited amount of server access may be needed but for those on business level websites may opt to have the full package access.

Web hosting is a great way to go for user who wish to share their memories, joys, and even work online. One should take into account the budget that one can spend and the actual time involved in designing one.

Free File Hosting with Unlimited File Size

Bethany | January 18, 2020June 9, 2020

Have you ever wanted to send, receive or just store a giant file? We are talking about in the range of gigs. Free file hosting servers tend to have a max of 200mb of file hosting. These companies also have short expiration dates on files that they host deleting them after just 30 days. So how can you get long lasting large files hosted for free for extended periods of time?

First you want to determine what you want. There isn’t really one web page that will satisfy all your needs but some are better than others. I have two web pages that I love and always fall back to my hosting needs. Mediafire.com and divshare.com, these web pages have different positive sides and negative ones to them.

My web page of choice is www.mediafire.com, this is a great web page that lets you upload as many files of any size less than 200mb. Its a very easy to navigate the web page and the sign-up is quick and painless. The only problem with this web page is that if you don’t log in after a certain number of days you will get an email saying you will need to log-in in a certain amount of time or all your files will be deleted. After receiving this email if you log-in, in the time you were given your files will still have been deleted, but will be returned after a few hours (this might even take a few days). The time mediafire gives you to log-in before sending the email and after sending the email is unique to your account. Accounts that take up more of their servers memory will have less time seeing as they are the bigger leeches.

Another amazing web page I found is www.divshare.com. Unlike mediafire your files will never be at risk of being deleted. The down side to this web page is it has a maximum file size of 200mb, (just like mediafire) but also a total upload upload size of 5gigs. This means that if you upload so many files, even if all are under 200mb, that they add up to 5gigs you cannot upload any more.

So, now you know were to go, but you’re still asking yourself how to get free unlimited file size hosting, both web pages I just listed have a 200mb file max. You could sign up for unlimited service and pay for unlimited or cheat the system. First off, you’ll need to get winrar and its free, so go do that. You can get it here: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm. Once you install winrar, right-click on the file and choose “Add to archive…”. A menu will pop up, all you need to concentrate on is the text box labeled “Split to volumes, bytes”. 1mb is 1,000,00 bytes so 200mb is 200,000,000, in the text box enter this number and the resulting zip files that will be created will be a max of 200mb. For every gig your file is there will be 5 zips that will be created (acutely between 5 and 6, not really important just a detail) so if your file is several gigs you might not want to do it on your desktop to keep things better organized. After the compression is complete just upload them to the file host and you’re done.

If you or some one else wish to unzip the file again, winrar will be needed and if any of the parts of the file are missing you will get an error saying “You need to have the following volume to continue extraction:” and it will list the part you need.

A really quick a work around for divshare.com to get around the 5gig total max is simply to crate a new profile, all you need is an email and you can get new emails for free at www.mail.com. But that’s a pain so I just stick to mediafire.

TechTips – What is the VMWare Server 2.0 Default Password?

Bethany | January 17, 2020June 9, 2020

Recently I installed VMWare Server 2.0 on my laptop to test out the latest version and see if I liked it. After I got VMWare Server 2.0 installed they had totally changed the method of loading the Virtual Machines. I found that all of the administration is web based and you do it through your web browser. This is fine but when I went to open the VMWare Server Home Page it prompted me for a log on name and password. I thought this was very weird since it hadn’t asked me to setup a user name and password. So it left me wondering what is the default user name and password.

I tried all the normal ones, admin with no password, no user name with admin as the password and after that I decided to do a little research. I quickly found that the VMWare creates a new user group for the Virtual Machines. This is where you need to put your user name and password for the administration of the site and so you can log in.

This is a simple task that I will walk you through with just a few quick steps and in no time you will be logging in and working on your Virtual Machines.

The easiest thing to do is to go to right click on the My Computer Icon and choose Manage. Go to the Local User and Groups and expand it. Then click on the folder Groups, in the right hand pane you will find a list of all the groups on your PC and you should see one labeled _VMWARE_ double click this and it will open a new window. In this window you will see a list of users with rights to this group (it’s probably empty), this group is the one that will allow users listed in here to log in to the web interface of the VMWare admin page. You need to add your user account in this group.

To do that you simple have to click the Add button at the bottom left of this window. Now if you are on a domain you will want to set the “From this location” to your local PC but if you aren’t you shouldn’t have to make any changes. Simply type the user name you want to add to this group and then click OK. Once you have added the user to the group go back to the VMWare web interface and you should be able to use the user name and password for the account you added to the _VMWARE_ group.

Viola you are now able to log in to the VMWARE interface and setup your Virtual Machines. Hope this guide helps you out with logging into the VMWare Server 2.0 interface.

Cloud Bookmarking: Organize Your Bookmarks

Bethany | January 15, 2020June 9, 2020

I have a confession to make: I am a bookmark pack rat. I have had hundreds of bookmarks, the vast majority for websites I rarely (if ever) visit. I have made some attempts at organizing these (mostly through bookmark folders in Firefox) but I still have had loads of uncategoized bookmarks outside the folders. This summer, I was tired of seeing all these messy bookmarks, so I decided to attempt something new and organize them through (what I termed) Cloud Bookmarking.

First off, I use Firefox for most of my Internet browsing. I’ve flirted with Google’s Chrome and found it useful, but I still like Firefox better. As I looked at my bookmarks, I realized one of my big bookmarking problems was that many of the unorganized ones I had were all from websites I had once wanted to read, but hadn’t had time to get to. Thus, I accumulated a backlog of plenty of unread, unorganized bookmarks. The organizaned ones I had were in a slightly better shape, but the sheer number I had of them caused my browser to load slower, so I needed to clean them up as well.

I run a laptop and a main desktop. Too often, the files (especially bookmarks) are out of sync with each other. The laptop is a little slower in processing speed than the desktop, so I wanted to make cleaning it a priority. Thus, I envisioned a bookmarking system in which all my bookmarks (aside from a few vital RSS and bookmark toolbar ones) would reside on an online server, easily accessible and updatable, but not stored in my Firefox browser.

Firefox is my favorite browser partly due to the huge number of incredibly useful applications available for it. I use Lifehacker to find a lot of awesome apps to add to my browser (although I try not to add too many) and I did a search on Lifehacker for a bookmarking tool. I had heard of Delicious, and of other social bookmarking websites, but I really didn’t need (and still don’t) to share my bookmarks with others. I still signed up for Delicious anyway, to give a trial run, and it had problems loading my browsers bookmarks onto its servers. Whatever. So, I tried another program, this one an application for Firefox called Xmarks (formerly Foxmarks). I was instantly impressed by the array of positive reviews on it online, along with the uber helpful developer feedback on Xmark’s website. I added the app, made and account, and tried it out.

Xmarks easily synced all my bookmarks to its serve, and I was able to access them from either computer. However, I still had a few issues when first setting it all up. I ran into the fairly annoying “password exclusion” error, something a few others have hit as well (based on my searching of Xmarks help section). Also, understanding some of the syncing profiles and such gave me a little trouble in the beginning. However, with a little patience, I was able to get it all set to my liking.

To rectify my “bookmarking-everything-I-can’t -read-at-the-moment-then-forget-about-it” problem, I found another program that works for just that: ReadItLater. It is an application for Firefox as well, and adds some nice functions to the browser that aid in quickly adding items to a “read it later list.” This list may be perused at one’s leisure, whenever. I had a little bit of an issue getting it not conflict with Xmarks, but once again, the helpful guides on Xmark’s website came to the rescue.

So, am I really “Cloud Bookmarking?” Not exactly. Some stuff is still stored on my Desktop, albeit more organized than before. My laptop is now the closest to Cloud Bookmarking though, with everything except a ReadItLater folder online. I’m happy with the setup and I hope it will increase my browser speeds as well as my productivity online.

iPods: The New Generation in Storage Devices

Bethany | January 10, 2020June 9, 2020

Do you ever hear people asking why are iPods so great or why everyone is making such a big deal about them? Well I can tell you exactly why iPods are the best music and multi-media storage device available. I’d like to start of by saying that I am a proud owner of a 30GB iPod video and the reason I bought an iPod was because of the amount of storage space available in such a little, compact, easy to carry device. The iPod Classic or Video allows you to not only store 1000’s of songs but over 50 hours of videos. In fact the brand new 160GB iPod Classic allows you to store 40,000 songs and over 200 hours of video. All of this memory is great to have because you don’t have to carry around all of your music collection in CD’s or cassettes.

Some people are skeptical about having so much memory. I hear people asking all the time, why do you need so many songs in one device? Every time I hear that question, I have the same answer, to have a variety of songs anytime at the touch of a finger. I can’t tell you how great it is to have any songs available to you at any point and time. Apple, the creator of iPods even made it easier for everyone to import their favorite music onto their iPods with the program called “iTunes”. With an easy click of a button, you can upload brand new songs and video to you iPod in a matter of seconds! What makes iTunes even better, is the fact that there is an online music store available right in the program! Apple could not have made using iPods and iTunes easier.

The second major reason iPods are the best multi-media storage device is because of all the accessories available. My personal favorite iPod accessory is the car adaptor. The car adaptor allows you to not only charge your iPod in the car but listen to music as well. The car adaptor is one of many great accessories including anything from carrying cases and portable speakers to docks and AV cables. All of the accessories for iPods are quality products that make the enjoyment of having an iPod even better.

IPods are often said to be unreliable and known to have many glitches. That statement is completely false. I mean, of course occasionally the iPod will freeze if you have 1000’s of songs stored and are trying to switch songs quickly but for the amount of storage the iPod has and the speed of processing the songs while playing is incredible. IPods are extremely sturdy as well. Depending on the version of iPod you get, most of them have some kind of metal in the material they’re made of. I’ve personally dropped my iPod approximately 20 times and the functioning works the same as when I took it out of the box. Also from my past experiences with MP3 players the iPod’s are definitely the most durable and most reliable out of any other brand of MP3 player.

IPods are great for any age audience. They make great gifts for anyone as well. IPods can serve many purposes, anywhere from entertaining kids with a movie to serving as a music player while jogging. IPods are really the best storage device available today.

NZB Drop – Download All the Files, and Only the Files You Want

Bethany | January 5, 2020June 9, 2020

I download quite a bit of stuff off the Internet, streaming video, music from etree (an organization that tracks bands which allow their concerts to be taped and traded), dozens of different Linux distributions, and more. I also like to watch and participate in various discussion groups on the Internet, from topics dealing with politics and sports to music and movies.

All of this can be done via Usenet, a part of the Internet that’s been around since before the advent of graphical web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Safari or Firefox. Usenet is, in many ways, the precursor to Internet message boards; it is a place where anyone can go and read what someone has written about a certain topic, respond publicly and have their views read and critiqued.

As graphical web browsers have grown and gained popularity, Usenet has found itself becoming less and less mainstream, until it seems that most of its use is for downloading programs and videos and music. Still, if you find the right group or subject, the Usenet experience can still be a positive one.

For most of my daily Usenet use, I use a full-fledged Usenet client, which lets me participate in discussions, as well as browse through the available downloads. I have reviewed my favorite of these clients – Unison – in a previous review. There are times, however, when all I want to do is download a specific set of files. I don’t want to browse to see what’s available. I know what I want, and I have a file that knows exactly where that stuff is.

NZB is a file format for use with Usenet, that tells a usenet client exactly which server a file has been uploaded to, and the names of each of that file’s parts. Unison is able to deal with NZB files quite well. In fact, most of the time all I need to do is double-click on one of these NZB files, and Unison will pop open and start downloading. But not all Usenet clients have this ability. Some don’t support the format. What about them?

For users of other programs, a small utility exists called NZB Drop. NZB Drop is a program that really only does one thing – download NZB files. It won’t let you read discussions, or browse through a group’s binary postings. All it does is take the NZB file you gave it, and download the items listed inside.

And in that regard, it does incredibly well, and is quite intelligent about it as well. The first thing that makes NZB Drop so nice to use is that after being configured, it’s ready to go. And if you use more than one Usenet server (one for reading posts and one for downloading stuff that might not be found on your regular server), NZB Drop handles this as well. Simply input your different servers, and for a server that you want to use only as a last resort (since you may have paid for premium access and don’t want to use it if you don’t have to), just mark it as such, and NZB Drop will only use said server if none of your “regular” servers have the items in question.

In my tests, NZB Drop did exactly what I expected of a program such as this, except in one area, in which the change was a pleasant surprise. To ensure that an uploaded file has the greatest chance of being downloaded completely uncorrupted, people sharing files have developed a system of par2 files, which are able to fix a file with missing pieces. These pieces are completely unnecessary if the downloaded file was transmitted completely free of error, and would only count as wasted bandwidth in that case.

NZB Drop deals with these files quite well. By default, only the main file is downloaded, along with the file necessary to see if that file is complete. If it is, the repair files are not downloaded. If they are needed, simply tell NZB Drop to download a few, and then click to repair. Easy and a nice feature!

Finally, NZB Drop is fast. Obviously, one downloading program should be just as fast as another, but this doesn’t always seem to be the case. My Usenet account allows me to connect up to 20 times at once, so I could conceivably be downloading 20 files, all at the same time. This is often unnecessary, however, since I am usually able to completely fill my download bandwidth from their servers, so adding connections wouldn’t be advantageous. For someone using a connection that limits the speed of individual connections but not the overall, this is a great feature, and one that can increase download speeds dramatically.

In my opinion, while NZB Drop is a great little one-trick pony, it may not be for everyone. It’s entirely possible to download files and read discussion groups on Usenet without ever using one of these NZB files, and for those people, NZB Drop is entirely unnecessary. For those of us who use the format, however, and might be stuck using a Usenet client without NZB support, ZNB Drop is a fantastic piece of software, and for those people, I can’t recommend it highly enough.
